Catamount State Forest is located on 1,125 acres in southwestern Colrain and eastern Charlemont. It is located one-half mile north of Route #2, one mile west of the junction of Route #2 and #112. The best access is via Four Mile Square Road from this point.
A 27-acre lake and nearby streams are stocked with trout. The area offers hiking and bridle trails as well as the opportunity for various winter activities.
History
The Catamount State Forest consisting of 1,125 acres was acquired in 1966 from Western Massachusetts Electric Company in exchange for a section of the Farley Tract in the Erving State Forest.
Activities
Fishing - There is excellent warm water fishing provided by a 47 acre take. Streams in the immediate vicinity are stocked by the Division of Fisheries and Game and provide excellent trout fishing.
Hunting - Hunting for all species of small game is good. There is excellent deer and bobcat hunting this forest.
Hiking - The many miles of maintained trails provide excellent hiking.
Riding - The many miles of roads and trails make this an ideal area for horseback riding.
Winter sports - The location of this area and the annual heavy snowfall make this area very good for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Points of Interest
The old Schoolhouse in the middle of this area is the first schoolhouse in the United States to have the American flag flown over it.
The wild animal dens in this forest are some of the best in New England.
