H. O. Cook State Forest, located one-mile east of Route 8A on State Farm Road in tnorthwestern Colrain and northeastern Heath, is one-half mile south of the Vermont state line. Its 1,620 acres offer hunting, fishing, hiking and horseback riding trails and winter activities. The more than five miles of streams include native brook trout.

To reach the forest, follow Route 8A northward from the village of Charlemont to State Farm Road which is on 8A about 1/2 mile south of the Vermont- Massachusetts State line. The forest is located 1 1/2 miles east of Route 8A on State Farm Road.

History
Original acquisition of the forest was in 1909. It was primarily open land that had been grazed by sheep. This open land was reforerted and is now one of the largest and thriftiest plantations in Massachusetts.

Facilities
This 1,620-acre forest is used as an experimental forest so no facilities other than a road have been provided.

Activities
Hunting - There is an abundance of small game and deer in this forest

Fishing - There are 27,300 feet of streams containing some native brook trout.

Hiking - All access roads are open to hiking and horseback riding.

Snowmobiling - In excess of 9 miles of unplowed roads are available for this sport.
