The Montague Bookmill is a used bookstore housed in an 1842 gristmill, set on the banks of the Sawmill River,a few miles north of Northampton and Amherst, Massachusetts. Our collection tends toward the academic, but we have hundreds of books on just about every subject, from gardening to Foucault.  All our books are half-price, including recent publisher’s overstocks from presses such as Princeton and Harper Collins.

We don’t sell junk. You won’t have to thumb past Rod McKuen to get to Cormac McCarthy. It is true, we are not particularly convenient. We are, however, simply beautiful. This old chestnut building is packed with great stuff, with couches for reading and studying hidden under every eave. Our windows look over the river and its waterfall. We have a deck right next to the water where you can relax, sip coffee, and read. In the winter the pace slows down a bit, inside gets quiet and cozy, and outside the waterfall freezes into sculpture.

There is a café here, as well as an antique shop, a used cd shop, a restaurant, and an artist’s studio. We have a weekly movie night in the winter, and concerts and performances the rest of the year. Take our short  walking tour - have a look around.

Look, this place is quite frankly unique, a lovely place where the well-read can get lost for hours. We’ve been lost for ten years now. How to find us.
